What is a firewall?
A firewall is a piece of software that is used to protect your computer from unauthorized access and blocks entry or transfer of data depending on the level of security it is configured to provide.
Am I likely to have a hardware firewall?
A hardware firewall is a device to which you connect your computers or network in order to protect them from unauthorized access, and is mostly used by network groups. If you are connected to BorgataPoker using an office computer, there is a high probability a hardware firewall is in place. Routers and modems fall under this category. Ask your network administrator to configure ports 2147 and 443.
Please can you explain some commonly used firewall terms?
Port: A port is a connection through which data is sent and received on the Internet. A port can either send and receive data in one direction at a time (simplex) or simultaneously in both directions (duplex). Security: This refers to techniques for ensuring that data stored in a computer cannot be read or compromised. Most security measures involve data encryption and passwords. Packet: A piece of a message transmitted over a packet-switching network. IP address: The IP address identifies a computer or device on a TCP/IP network. Networks using the TCP/IP protocol route messages based on the IP address of the destination. The format of an IP address is a 32-bit nEffect of the request, making the firewall page more generally compatible.
